What is 4K TV?

What is 4K TV?

4K refers to the resolution of a display device with a horizontal resolution on the order of 4,000 pixels. To put it into perspective, even high-definition TVs usually only pack about a quarter the number of pixels in the same amount of space. Put simply, more pixels equals a much sharper image which means a more immersive experience. It means that slasher films will be scarier, Inception will be even more incomprehensible, and The Lego Movie somehow will be even more awesome.

What comes in 4K?

Does Netflix stream in 4K? Yes, but while their selection of 4K movies is increasing, it is still limited. One critical thing to take into account is whether your devices are even capable of displaying 4K quality. HD and 4K are not the same. Just because you have a HDTV doesn’t mean that you can enjoy the riveting quality that 4K has to offer.

Does 4K matter?

At a distance, most televisions will actually look the same. To gain the maximum benefit, it really depends on how close you are to the screen. As seen from the graph below, the screen size and definition of the screen are very important. For example, all TVs from 480p all the way to 4K look the same starting at ten feet with a 25-inch screen.

Can you remember the HD TV race? It seemed that buying a brand new TV today only meant that it would be outdated tomorrow. I remember buying my flatscreen TV at the initial onslaught of flatscreen televisions. If I had waited a year, I could have purchased a bigger screen by a better brand for less money than I paid. 4K will inevitably be the same. Sure, you could purchase a 4K TV right now and enjoy it, but if you wait a year or so you will be able to get a better, cheaper TV from a better brand. While the 4K evolution is great, just wait it out. If you want to check it out for yourself, check out the video below.
