When people talk about VoIP do you feel like they are speaking a different language?

This is one you should actually look into. It can save you a bundle on your monthly phone bill. It’s not too complicated. We’ve got you covered with a VoIP FAQ sheet!

What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice-over-Internet Protocol. Basically, it allows voice to be transmitted through the Internet. It’s like using the phone, but with the Internet!

Why would I need or use VoIP?

VoIP is a fantastic way to save money on your monthly phone bill. There are no long-distance fees. Plus, it comes with newer features like voicemail going to email and tracking to allow easier callbacks. Basically, you are sending an email with your voice.

Can calls be forwarded to mobile devices?

The answer is yes, depending on your provider. Typically, it is a very straightforward process to have calls sent to your cell phone or any other phone number.

What do I need to use VoIP?

You need an Internet connection, obviously. The higher speed, the better the sound quality.

Secondly you’ll need software to support VoIP. You can install this onto your computer(s) as needed.

A lot of people will also set their home phone up as a VoIP dialer. If this is you, you’ll need an adapter as well. This allows to software to be integrated into your phone line.

Does is still work when the power is out?

Unfortunately, given the reliance on the Internet, VoIP does go down when the power goes out.

Are my calls secure?

There are two services that encrypt their calls—Skype and VoicePulse. This protects the digital packets used to send VoIP from being decoded. Most others have their own types of encryption. This said, there is not a large focus on people “hacking” VoIP info.
