Tech Pioneers: Adobe

13 Nov, 2015 McKell Naegle

Adobe is well known as the tool of choice for designers. Since its creation in 1982, it’s had a massive impact on the world of graphic design. To celebrate their contributions, we’ve created a list of the top five most important Adobe tools to date!

Adobe Illustrator

One of Adobe’s first revolutionary products was Adobe Illustrator. This was released in the early ‘80s as a program for Apple Macintosh and was a competitor for MacDraw. However, unlike MacDraw, Illustrator created shapes using bezier curves (a tool that uses three points to define a curve) to provide unprecedented accuracy. This accuracy is still an important feature that allows artists to create beautiful, photorealistic illustrations.

Adobe Photoshop

In 1989, Adobe released the first version of Photoshop, which has since become their flagship product. It quickly dominated the market and become the go-to tool for visual artists. Its many revolutionary features and tools have made it an invaluable tool for photographers.

In 1993, Adobe introduced the world to the PDF, or Portable Document Format. Since then the PDF has become an international standard, which makes Adobe Acrobat indispensable.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere was released in 1991 and was one of the first computer based non-linear editing systems, which means it made it possible for video editors to create new content without destroying the original content. Many respected news broadcasters such as CNN and BBC use Premiere Pro. It’s also been used to create popular films such as Gone Girl.

Adobe Type

Adobe has always been an innovator in typography. In addition to being a popular type foundry, they also created OpenType, which is a format for scalable computer fonts that has become very common on many different computer platforms.
