Foursquare & Gowalla

Foursquare and Gowalla, among other location-based apps, are gaining more and more traction.

It is interesting to see large corporations start to sit up and take notice.

They are now offering rewards through these location-based mobile apps.

A good example is the recent partnership between American Express and Foursquare. American Express cardholders can register their card with Foursquare, and when they check in at participating vendors, they receive discounts and credits toward their bill. We’re not talking Facebook credits here; this is cold, hard, REAL cash.

Another good example is JetBlue, who offers additional air miles in its loyalty program for users who use Facebook Places to check in at any of its hub airports.

Social Media isn’t just for geeks anymore.

Many companies are now seeing the link between check-in and loyalty.

Do you use location aware applications on your iPhone, Android phone, or other handheld? Why or why not?

Would you do more with these apps if more incentives (like the ones mentioned above) were offered?
