Big Changes Are Coming To Facebook

12 Oct, 2015 McKell Naegle

Facebook is making some big changes. The social media landscape is constantly evolving, and Facebook is doing its best to keep up. They’re currently testing different digital ads, changes to the profile page, and a shopping tab. Some of these are currently rolling out, and some are expected to be released in the future.

Faster Ads

Advertising is a massive part of Facebook’s revenue, especially mobile advertising. Facebook is trying to make the ad experience faster and easier for both advertisers and customers. An article from Fortune describes how Facebook is planning on improving this experience.

When users click on products from ads in their News Feed—the stream of updates and other content that makes up Facebook’s core experience— they are often taken to a mobile website outside of Facebook’s network that is slow to load. The new ad format allows those users to click through to a Facebook page where they can browse a retailer’s products. Only after a user wants to purchase an item does he or she have to click through to the retailer’s own website. The idea: Give a user less opportunity to leave, frustrated by a slow-loading site.

Shopping tab

Facebook isn’t only satisfied with improving ads – they want to take a slice out of Amazon’s market. Facebook is currently testing a shopping section, located in the sidebar near the events tab. Many businesses have a tab on their fan page where they sell products. Facebook aims to put all of these in the shopping tab, allowing users to see all the products for sale from the companies they follow. Facebook plans to greatly expand their e-commerce reach through this and other planned improvements.

Improved Profile

Facebook has introduced several new updates to the profile page. The biggest of which was the ability to make your profile photo a video. They go into more detail on their blog.

The world has changed since we first introduced profiles in 2004. On News Feed and profiles, we’re seeing people create and view more videos than ever before. Today we’re starting to test the next step in an obvious evolution of profiles: profile videos. Soon, you’ll be able to film a short, looping video clip that will play for anyone who visits your profile. Profile videos will let show a part of yourself you couldn’t before, and add a new dimension to your profile.

In addition to the profile videos, users can set a temporary profile photo, and have the option to add a tagline to their profile. The temporary profile photo can be set for a custom time, after which it returns to the previous photo. A tagline is similar to the Twitter bio, a space for a little bit about you.
