6 Common Marketing Mistakes

24 Jun, 2014 McKell Naegle

Advertising and marketing, like most things, have a right and wrong way to go about doing it. Generally, businesses make common mistakes that are often easily avoidable. For the most part, the biggest problems occur within the implementation of the plan rather than the tactics and ideas behind it. Below is a list of the most common mistakes businesses make when advertising and marketing.

Marketing to a Broad Audience

One of the most common problems is targeting the wrong audience. Companies sometimes try to market to everyone. While this seems like a good idea, the business is most likely reaching people who have no interest or intention of purchasing their product. However, if a business targets a smaller but more interested audience, their brand will be more appealing and recognized. Businesses feel that targeting a smaller audience will leave others out, but it will allow them to be recognized by that target group, rather than be one of many options that is not recognizable.

Copying Industry Leaders

Mimicking the leader in your industry is not the best thing to do either. You should analyze their plan to see what they do well, but don’t copy it. You need to tell consumers why you and what you offer are better. Stress your differentiation. If you copy the industry leader’s plan, you could end up looking same, which will give your business a lack of identity.

Lack of Budget

Digital marketing budgets need to be well funded. Having a small marketing budget doesn’t help your business. Marketing is a very time-consuming process and can be expensive. Not having enough money devoted to marketing will make your business suffer. You will not be able to reach your audience, grow your business, and get your brand known. Generally, no marketing equals no business.

Product Focus

Businesses focus most of their marketing campaign on the product or service they are offering. This is great to get word out, but it usually doesn’t make the consumer buy it. However, if you focus more on how the product will benefit and impact the consumer’s life, it will go much farther. Try to give the consumer a reason to buy your product or service, rather than just explaining its features.

Giving Up Too Early

Businesses want quick results, but with marketing and advertising, that usually doesn’t happen. It can take months to see the results of a campaign. Plan out everything and make it consistent. Consumers need to feel a sense of credibility and trust from a business before they patronize it. Being consistent will allow you and your business to build credibility. Once you are considered credible, you will start seeing results, but remember, it takes time. Set goals and track your campaign so you can see how it is performing.

Lack of Know How

Marketing and advertising are inherently complicated. If you don’t know how to go about it, get help. Setting up a poor marketing plan and executing it is a waste of time and money. Marketing and advertising agencies are full of professionals who can maximize your budget to get you results that you want. They can help set of strategy, implement the plan, and track results. They can give you advice so you can start to do your own marketing in the future. Hiring an advertising agency also allows you to spend more time focusing on your business and customers. So, if you have never done marketing before or have limited knowledge, hire an agency. It will help your business much more than a poor marketing plan.

Those are some of the most common mistakes made when marketing and advertising. Hopefully knowing about them will help you avoid them when you are marketing your business. Happy marketing!
