Back to the Future Day is finally here! The second in a three-part series, Back to the Future II was released in 1989. In the movie, Doc Brown, Marty McFly, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, travel to October 21, 2015. That’s today! Though the movie wasn’t claiming to accurately predict the future, the inevitable comparisons have been made.
Let’s look at five pieces of technology portrayed in Back to the Future II, and how they actually look today.
1. Nike Mag Shoes
One of the coolest things to come out of Marty’s trip to the future were his awesome Nike shoes. With a cool look and self-lacing laces, they were – and are – the envy of every Nike lover. In recent years, fans have been clamoring Nike to actually make the shoes. In 2011, 1,500 shoes were made and auctioned off for charity, though they were not self-lacing. However, it was announced today that Nike is releasing the Nike Mag, real self-lacing shoes!

Marty’s hoverboard provided one of the coolest scenes from the movie, and we’ve been hoping for a hoverboard ever since. While there isn’t anything exactly like Marty’s hoverboard, there have been some recent developments.
3. Major League Baseball: Cubs Win!
The Cubs? Really? Yes, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series in Back to the Future 2. This was meant to be more of a joke, as the Cubs last won the World Series in 1908. However, the Cubs are having a great season. They’re one round away from the World Series, but they’re down three games to one to the New York Mets. One game from elimination. It doesn’t look good for this prediction, but crazier things have happened.
Drones have become very popular recently. We have video drones, toy drones, and soon, Amazon drones! In back to the future 2, there was a dog-walking drone. While we haven’t seen anything quite like this, drones are common place now, and this is something they weren’t too far off on.
One of the crazier things Back to the Future II predicted was flying cars. In fact, this is a pretty often prediction. We have quite the obsession with flying cars. Unfortunately, this prediction was off. While there are a few prototypes, we’re nowhere close to mass production.
In 2015, Doc Brown powers his DeLorean time machine with the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor. Essentially, he powered his car with garbage. While it isn’t recommended to stick garbage in your gas tank quite yet, we have come a long ways in regards to alternative energy. Many different companies are working on different versions of alternative-energy vehicles, with electric cars being at the forefront.
